Top 10 Reasons for Skating

3933839What are your top reasons to skate? From 10 to 1 we’ve got a few of our favorite reasons (or excuses) to lace up our skates! Here they are:

10. Date Night

We’ve shared about date night before! Roller skating makes a great date night and leaves a lasting impression. Just check out this sweet couple that met over 60 years ago while roller skating. What are you waiting for? Ask him or her to join you at the rink this week!

9. Celebration

There is always something to celebrate. You can celebrate graduation, losing a tooth, learning to ride a bike, or any other milestone that you deem necessary to celebrate! At Roller Kingdom we’ve got the lights and the music to help get you celebrate!

8. Cabin Fever

In Massachusetts we suffer from winters that are so cold we can’t get out, and then in the summer it gets so hot that it’s miserable to go out! At Roller Kingdom you can beat the heat in the summer, and say “Whatevs!” to the snow in the winter! We’re here to help give you a break away from home in Tyngsboro and Hudson!

7. Exercise

Did you know that about 18 laps around the rink = a mile? We say skating is easier and more fun than running (no offense to you runners out there!) so come on out and skate. Use this handy dandy calculator to figure out how many calories you burn skating!

6. Learn a New Skill

Let’s be real, skating takes skill. That’s why we offer lessons and coaching for general skating, artistic skate, speed skate, and demos for jam skating. Whatever your interest is, and no matter what new skills you want to learn on those wheels, we’ve got it going on at Roller Kingdom!

5. Competition

Some people are just born competitive. If you’re one of them, then you need to know that we’ve got competitive skate opportunities at Roller Kingdom. Check out the Artistic Skate Competition we held in 2014.

4. Social Life

Need a place to hang out with your friends, or just interested in getting out and meeting new people? Roller Kingdom is a great place to do both! Build your social life with fun activites at Roller Kingdom.

3. It’s Fun!

Roller Kingdom is full of fun! We’ve got skating of course, but we also offer laser tag and an arcade where you can win tickets for prizes. What’s not to love with all of these opportunties for fun?!

2. Party

If you’re looking to put a little spin (pun intended) on your party style, book your next birthday party at Roller Kingdom! We can easily customize your birthday party to meet your needs, or you can book the rink for a private party!

1. Challenge

Looking for a challenge? The Hokey Pokey, Chicken Dance, and Shoot the Duck never get old! Join us for skating games and see if you can be the next champion!

These are just a few of our fun excuses for why we love to skate at Roller Kingdom! What are your favorite excuses or reasons for skating? Make sure you share with us here or on Facebook and Twitter!

Three Cool Skating Styles to Help you Stay Cool

On average, July is the hottest month of the year in Tyngsboro, MA. It is nice to be able to get out of the heat and cool down in some of the arctic air from the ice cold air conditioning at Roller Kingdom. We not only like to allow Massachusetts and New Hampshire residents a chance to cool off, but we like to offer several cool opportunities for a variety of skating.Skating Competition

Artistic Skate

Adult artistic skate is on Thursdays from 10 am to noon at the Tyngsboro Roller Kingdom. $6 admission includes skates. This style of skating is alive and well and the Hudson Roller Kingdom recently hosted an artistic roller skating competition. Contact us to find out more about how you can get involved in artistic skating.

Jam Skating

Jam skating is a style of skating all its own. It started in the 90’s and has been going strong ever since. With a unique following, many refer to jam skating as break dancing on wheels. The Hudson Roller Kingdom recently hosted a jam skating demo night, and there are sure to be more events in the future. Make sure you check our Facebook and Twitter for updates on events.

Speed Skating

The Speed Team meets from 6-8pm on Wednesdays at Hudson Roller Kingdom. Participation is $10. If you enjoyed watching Olympic speed skating, then you will most likely enjoy watching or taking part in our Speed Team. We know that the Olympic speed skating takes place on ice, but we’re hoping to keep Roller Kingdom cool enough to feel like ice. Plus, we should mention that there are a few Olympic speed skaters that got their start on wheels. Maybe the future Olympian at Speed Team practice could be you!

These three skating styles will be going on throughout the summer. Of course, you don’t have to join us just for artistic, jam, or speed skating. You are welcome to join us for any of our public skating sessions, or even book a party or private event if you’d like. We hope you’ve been having a great summer so far, and we look forward to having you cool down with us before the countdown to school starts back up.

Jam Skating Demo

What makes for a great night? Something unique, memorable, and fun! If you are left scratching your head and trying to figure out what fits those requirements, we’ve got the solution for you! On Friday, June 20, 2014 we are hosting a Jam Skating Demo at the Hudson Roller Kingdom!Jam Skating Session

If you are new to the lingo, then we will break it down for you. First, we are talking about jam skating, as in a style of skating that’s been about since the 90’s! Some describe it as break dancing on wheels. That’s what we are talking about for Jam Skating; we are not talking about strawberry or raspberry jam. Those don’t really have anything to do with our Jam Skating Demo, but they do work well on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

Second, when we say demo, we mean demonstration and not demolition. Just because Jam Skating is known as break dancing on wheels, it doesn’t mean that anything is actually going to get broken or demolished!

Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, you need to know some specifics:

What: Jam Skating Demo

When: Friday, June 20, 2014 from 7pm-10pm

Where: Hudson, MA Roller Kingdom

Who: You and your crew! Bring em out!

Cost: $7 (includes rental!)

Got any other questions? Make sure you call us or send us a message to let us know. Otherwise, we hope to see you there. Here’s a little teaser video to share a little bit of what you’ll see at our Jam Skating Demo on the 20th:

Who know’s we might get you out there Jam Skating with us, be ready to show off your moves!

Have You Outgrown Your Skates?

We are readily anticipating the summer season at Roller Kingdom. We’ve been counting down the days until school is out and are ready to skate every chance we get. You may find that you are in the same situation, but have outgrown your skates. Even if your skates still fit, it may be time for a new pair depending on why you skate. At Roller Kingdom in Hudson and Tyngsboro, we have active Artistic skating teams, and Speed Skating. We’ve also had quite a few skaters break it down with their jam skating moves!Skate Shop

When purchasing skates, it is important to keep in mind what the skates will be used for. Certainly an artistic skater will not need the same type of skates that a speed skater will need. These choices are much more complicated than just choosing quads or inlines.

We recognize that for skaters, buying the right pair of skates is essential. For this reason, we are able to answer any questions that you may have in the process of purchasing skates. We keep a variety of sizes and styles in stock at the Skate Shops in both of our locations, so you can easily try skates on and take a spin around the rink before committing to buying them. If we do not have what you are looking for, we can order nearly anything from our suppliers.

As you prepare for our summer season, don’t forget about our Skate Rebate. We are offering skating passes equivalent to the dollar amount you spend on skates. This is a great way to kick off your summer with brand new skates and free skating at Roller Kingdom!

Roller Skating Then and Now

You may not think too much about those roller skates and how they came to be when you put them on your feet at Roller Kingdom. While you may enjoy rolling, turning, and gliding across the skate floor, skating was not always as simple as it now is in our Tyngsboro and Hudson rinks.Roller Skating History from Wikipedia

Taking a look at the history of skating, it is evident that the first pair of skates recorded as an invention took their place in the history books in 1760. These skates, developed by inventor John Joseph Merlin, were made with small metal wheels and had their wheels in one line similar to modern day inline skates. It was not until nearly sixty years later in 1819 when the first patent for roller skates was recorded. These skates again were similar to modern day inline skates, but were still quite basic. Simple maneuverability was quite difficult.

A large improvement was made in control and maneuverability in skate design in 1863. A furniture store owner named James Leonard Plimpton designed quad skates with two pairs of wheels. This allowed skaters to turn more easily and led to the first public skating rinks in the United States in 1866.

As skating design continued to change and safety measures such as the toe stop, added in 1876, skating started to take off. Roller skating was largely popular in the United States between 1935 and the early 1960’s. Another spike in skating interest took place in the 1970’s with further wheel improvements and disco music.

What about now?

Fast forward to current day and roller skating is still alive and well. In addition to skating for fitness and fun, at Roller Kingdom speed skating and artistic skating are still a part of what happens each week. Looking back at the history of skating and the change in skates over the years, it leaves the question that is ultimately a personal choice now. What is better, quads or inlines?

Feel free to weigh in on your opinion regarding quads or inlines on our social media channels. Make sure you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google + to keep up with modern day skating events at Roller Kingdom.
